On Island Time: Traveling to Key West, FL

Date
Apr, 14, 2022

Anyone else ready for a vacation?! Come January, Traeton and I are always itching for a little sun and sand to escape the brutal cold of the Midwest. We always try to do at least one trip in the spring for our anniversary. This time, it landed us in Key West! I think it is safe to say, the Keys have become our most favorite vacation destination. I could go on and on about why we love it so much, but here’s a little insight as to why:

Where We Stayed

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Perry Hotel and Marina for a multitude of reasons. While there is no beach (as is common for most hotels), they are directly on the water and even have their own marina. They also boast 2 pools, 3 restaurants, an ice-cream shop, coffee shop, convenience store, AND two small dog areas. Talk about a one stop shop! We loved being able to walk around in our own little world, not feeling the need to leave property. The Perry is located on Stock Island, about 15 minutes from Duval Street in Key West.

What We Did

While we were in paradise for 5 days, I felt as if we could have stayed twice as long and still not run out of things to do! We of course took in the amenities of our hotel, laying by the pool and sipping mojitos. However, we really enjoyed walking around downtown Key West, admiring the homes and uniqueness of the area. Duval Street is the main tourist drag, with a multitude of dive bars and souvenir shops. Although, we preferred eating and drinking at A&B Marina, only a few blocks off Duval Street.

Our most favorite and treasured part of the entire trip; was the private boating excursion. We were itching for an activity that would allow us to see the Keys from a different perspective. We began looking into boating excursions. There are hundreds of boat charters, both private and commercial. Also meaning a large difference in types of excursions, as well as prices. We placed a lot of value on reviews and research. This led us to our wonderful captain, Austin. Austin is a one man show, and an excellent one at that! He took us out on his private boat and chartered us around to some of the most stunning beaches I have ever seen. Being a local himself, Austin was able to take us to local hangouts, as well as excluded beaches off the beaten path. He provides the cooler, and any type of beach necessity you can think of (chairs, hammocks, even sunscreen). I cannot…I mean really CANNOT recommend doing this enough. It was by far our most treasured memory, and we will be sure book with Austin again!

Where We Ate

I don’t care who you are, the food is arguably one of the best parts of traveling! The Keys are understandably known for their many fresh seafood options. Not to worry; if not are not a fellow seafood lover (*eye roll* @ Traeton), there are so many other wonderful options to choose from. A few places we can 1000% recommend are A&B Lobster House, The White Tarpon, and Louie’s Backyard. Just to name a few of the MANY excellent options.

How We Got There

When we booked the trip, it was more affordable to fly into the Miami airport, and rent a car. Although, Key West does have their own airport, which is worth looking into. We rented our car through Turo, a service that drops your rental car off where you request (in our case, right to us at the airport!) and picks it back up as well. We then drove down to Key West, which is about a 4-hour trip. Keep in mind, there is only one road that takes you down to the Keys: Overseas Highway. There are many, and I mean many bridges to cross, which make sense as you are driving through islands. However, not being a fan of bridges myself, it did make the trip rather …interesting, haha! We were lucky not to run into too many hold ups, but if there is an accident, be aware it can add on a substantial amount of time since there is only one road.

What We Loved Most

While we didn’t have any of the infamous “Key” Lime Pie, you MUST try the Key Lime martini. I think I had one at every restaurant we went to – oops! We also loved how laid back the culture and ambiance are. Relax, you’re on island time baby! Also, because the vibe is so chill, there’s no need to pack your heels, stick to sandals and a sundress. Lastly, we loved that it feels like a different country, but you don’t have to leave the states! Outfit inspo below:

Things to Note

Off Season vs. Busy Season:

Our previous trip to the Keys was during slow season (October), and it was very apparent in terms of accommodation prices.  As most vacation destinations, March is one of the busiest months in for tourism on the islands. This was reflected in the prices of all hotels (understandably. The island traffic was also quieter during October versus March.

Weather:

On the flip side, weather is much more predictable during March in comparison to October. You can expect mid 80’s and sunshine during the March/April time frame, whereas June – October is hurricane season. We took the risk during October and lucked out with amazing weather, although be aware that is not always the case.

Beaches:

In general, the Florida Keys do not have beaches found in nature. So, some hotels and community areas have built their own “beach” for people to enjoy. If your hotel does not have a beach, I highly recommend looking up the nearest community beach – your hotel may even have a shuttle running there!

I could go on and on about what makes these little islands so amazing, but I guess you will just have to see for yourself! Who knows? Maybe I will see ya down there. ;). Feel free to reach out with any questions as well, I would love to help!
